How OralID Technology Improves Oral Cancer Detection
Oral cancer is becoming one of the more prevalent forms of cancer today, yet people rarely talk about it. One of the biggest concerns is that many patients are not diagnosed until the disease has already progressed. At Forney Family Dentistry & Orthodontics, we want to change that with OralID™, a technology designed to detect oral cancer earlier.
Some of the major risk factors for oral cancer include:
- Age 40 years or older
- Alcohol use
- Smoking
- Smokeless tobacco
- Previous oral cancer history
Because your health is our highest concern and oral cancer is extremely dangerous, we’ve invested in an amazing new technology called OralID. OralID can detect cancer in your mouth before Dr. Morrison can see it with their own eyes. OralID uses sophisticated fluorescence technology to highlight areas where your cells have undergone morphological changes. The OralID process is simple:
- Dr. Morrison will gently examine the outside and inside of your mouth for any lesions or unusual growths.
- We use a blue OralID light to scan your mouth and help identify any abnormal discoloration or tissue changes.
- If we find anything unusual, Dr. Morrison will discuss the findings and any recommended next steps with you.
Even if you do not have the risk factors listed above, screening is still important. This reason is why Dr. Morrison recommends checking for oral cancer with every patient during their routine dental check-up. We’ve found that forty percent of oral cancers occur in people who don’t identify with any of these risk factors.
