Periodontal Splint

Keep Loose Teeth in Place With a Periodontal Splint in Forney, TX

What Is a Periodontal Splint and When Do You Need One?

Teeth are normally supported firmly in the mouth by the gums and the bone that surrounds them. However, when these structures become weakened, the teeth can loosen over time. At Forney Family Dentistry& Orthodontics, we recommend a periodontal splint when a patient experiences tooth mobility due to periodontal disease or injury.

One of the effects of periodontal disease is the gradual loosening of the teeth as the surrounding gum and bone tissue becomes compromised. As the infection progresses, the support around the teeth can weaken, allowing them to shift or move when biting or chewing. Teeth may also become loose due to traumatic injury. In both cases, chewing can become painful or difficult.

One effective solution for this problem is dental splinting. In dental splinting, dentists stabilize the affected teeth by joining them together so they function as a group rather than individually. This method ensures the teeth can withstand pressure by evenly distributing it, thereby minimizing the problem in the affected areas. For many patients with loose teeth, periodontal splinting can be an effective solution.

How Periodontal Splinting Stabilizes Loose Teeth

A periodontal splint offered by Dr. Morrison works by connecting two or more teeth so they can support each other during daily use. Depending on the patient’s needs, the splint may be either temporary or fixed.

Teeth can be splinted together temporarily with extra-coronal splints. These splints are bonded to the outer surface of tooth enamel and help hold teeth in place while tissues heal or during other periodontal procedures.

Another option is an intra-coronal splint. In this case, the dentist carefully cuts a channel into the teeth and inserts a metal splint. The dentist then cements the metal splint in place, holding the teeth while maintaining a natural appearance. In permanent or fixed splinting, the dentist fuses the crowns of the affected teeth together.
