What Is a Post and Core, and Why Might You Need One?
If a large enough portion of a tooth is missing, whether because of a cavity, the loss of a filling, or the access cavity from root canal work, a restorative dentist can’t simply place a crown on the tooth, because it won’t be stable enough. This is where a core comes in: it replaces the missing tooth structure and provides support for the new crown. Sometimes the core is enough, but if not, a post may be added to anchor the core to the tooth.
The “core” is a buildup material used to replace missing tooth structure. It is designed to replace the lost tooth structure so that a crown can fit comfortably on top. If the remaining tooth is not strong enough to support the core on its own, a small post is placed inside the tooth to hold everything in place. The post is placed inside the space created in the root canal, which was previously sealed during the root canal treatment.
This is usually recommended, especially after a root canal and when a large filling has failed, or a considerable portion of the tooth has broken away. This is important because, by strengthening the inside of the tooth, a post and core will help you retain your original tooth and avoid losing it. After this, a special crown is then placed to restore the tooth and enable you to chew as before.
Material Matters With Core and Post Treatment
The material used in the post-and-core procedure plays a significant role in the success of the restoration. Previously, metal posts were used in the procedure. Metal is strong; however, it does not flex as readily as natural tooth structure. Clinical evidence shows that metal posts don’t do much to stabilize the tooth, may cause unequal pressure on the tooth, and may lead to fractures.
Currently, fiber posts are often preferred because they more closely resemble dentin in terms of flexibility. This allows for more even distribution of pressure throughout the tooth and bone. This could make the tooth feel more natural and reduce any complications.
At Forney Family Dentistry, we carefully evaluate the condition of your tooth and choose materials designed to provide reliable support and long-term durability. Our goal is not only to rebuild what was lost, but to create a restoration that feels stable, functions properly, and helps protect your smile for years to come.
