The Smiles of Grace is a nonprofit organization that I started four years ago. It's an event that we hold at Forney Family Dentistry every year in the fall. We are blessed to be able to open our doors to the community and offer any procedures that the patients may need.
The event is very unique because we stand on the foundation on Scripture, and we offer services out of the love and grace that Jesus offers to us, hence the Smiles of Grace name. 1 Peter 4:10 is our foundational scripture for Smiles of Grace. It says "God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. You have the gift of helping others. Do it with all the strength and energy God supplies and everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ."
We provide patients with prayer for anyone that is wanting prayer. We have a prayer team and pastors that are here for that. We offer a Bible to anyone who is requesting one. We also provide groceries to anybody and we have a signup sheet for people to be able to sign up for holiday meals. We follow up with them and continue to offer any kind of assistance or blessings that we can help with. We also have an angel tree where patients can sign up for their own family members or for a child that they know of that is in need of some little extra attention around the holidays.
It's an amazing event that, really, the dentistry that we do is the least of anything else. I've noticed that people that come are more touched by the love and the kindness that we're showing them. The opportunity for them to just talk and tell their story, and for us to be able to gather around them and pray for their needs or their concerns, or just to lift them up. We've had people that came here that have never known Jesus, that accepted Jesus into their heart for the first time, which is just such an amazing, humbling experience that I love what I do. I love being a dentist, and I try to glorify God in everything, in all my actions. But I never really thought that he would use me through the talent that He blessed me with. For me to be able to tell someone I can give them a denture, and at the same time, provide them with a Bible, groceries, and the ability to have someone to pray with them.
So it's an event that all of us, the whole team, just really looks excited and looks forward to. We want to be able to help people and that gives us the opportunity to share the talents God blessed us with, with patients and within the community.
