Treating a Twisted Tooth

Woman with an attractive smileMany dental patients are bothered by a cosmetic imperfection that keeps their ideal smile just out of reach. Fortunately, by undergoing cosmetic dentistry treatment to address aesthetic blemishes, most patients can finally enjoy the straight, white, attractive teeth they desire.

At Forney Family Dentistry and Orthodontics, our experienced team of dentists offers a wide range of cosmetic, restorative, and orthodontic treatments that correct structural and aesthetic dental problems. A twisted tooth is one of the many imperfections we can address. When patients come to us with a twisted tooth, we will examine the entire mouth, including the jawbone, to determine the most appropriate treatment technique. After undergoing treatment for a twisted tooth, our Forney, TX patients will benefit from teeth that are straighter, more symmetrical, and more attractive.

Do I Need Braces?

When a tooth is twisted or out of alignment with the rest of the teeth, it is common for patients to question whether they need braces. In some cases, orthodontic treatment is necessary to straighten the twisted tooth and improve the patient’s bite. Our dentists will thoroughly examine the teeth to determine if a twisted tooth is a purely cosmetic problem, or if there are other malocclusion problems present that have compromised the position of the tooth. If orthodontic treatment is necessary, patients can consider traditional braces or Invisalign®.

  • Braces: Braces are the most traditional form of orthodontic treatment. During braces treatment, our dentists apply a series of brackets and wires to the teeth. Periodically, patients return to our office for the wires to be adjusted. This system places subtle pressure on the teeth and jaw that gradually corrects the bite and improves the position of the teeth. Each treatment is personalized to the patient’s unique needs, but patients can expect a straighter, healthier smile after about 12 to 18 months of braces treatment.
  • Invisalign®: Invisalign® is a more discreet alternative to braces. This metal-free system uses a series of clear, plastic aligners to place pressure on the teeth and jaw. As patients progress through the aligners, the teeth and jaw gradually shift into proper position. Invisalign® offers results that are comparable to braces in a similar timeframe, but many patients find that Invisalign® is a more comfortable and convenient treatment option.

What if I Don’t Need Braces?

After having the mouth examined, many patients with a twisted tooth learn that orthodontic treatment is not necessary. If the bite is aligned and the twisted tooth has not compromised the health and function of the smile, there is no need to undergo months of orthodontic treatment. However, most of these patients are still eager to improve the appearance of the smile. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry treatment can help with that.

Porcelain veneers are a great option for patients who want to improve the appearance of a twisted tooth. Porcelain veneers are thin shells that sit over the natural teeth to conceal cosmetic blemishes. Aside from hiding problems such as a twisted tooth, veneers can also improve the size, shape, and color of the teeth. One of the greatest benefits of this treatment is that it can be completed in as little as two dental appointments. In a matter of weeks, patients can enjoy straighter, more attractive teeth.
