Replacing Worn or Damaged Porcelain Veneers

Dr. Melina Cozby Jan 4, 2017

Replacement of porcelain veneersOne of the most versatile and effective cosmetic dentistry treatments is the placement of porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers bond to the facial surface of the teeth to conceal aesthetic blemishes. If surface stains, discoloration, chips, cracks, fractures, or spacing problems have compromised the appearance of your smile, porcelain veneers can help.

Because of the high quality of materials used to craft porcelain veneers, these fabrications can enhance the smile for many years. However, should porcelain veneers become damaged, or if they simply reach the end of their anticipated lifespan, they will need to be replaced. At Forney Family Dentistry, we offer porcelain veneers replacement for our Forney, TX patients so that they can continue to enjoy a beautiful smile.

When to Replace Porcelain Veneers

Many patients who are ready to undergo porcelain veneers treatment want to know when they will need to be replaced. There is no set answer for how long porcelain veneers will last. Just as the natural teeth are susceptible to damage, so are porcelain veneers. If porcelain veneers become worn down or damaged, it is important to replace them before the natural teeth are put at risk.

Similarly, if the underlying natural teeth become compromised by decay or infection, that will also necessitate the removal of porcelain veneers.

On average, patients can expect their porcelain veneers to last at least 10 to 15 years. With proper care, porcelain veneers can last for 20 years or more before needing replacement.

The Replacement Procedure

The replacement procedure for porcelain veneers is nearly identical to the initial treatment process. The primary difference is that the existing porcelain veneers will need to removed. Our dentist will administer local anesthetic before removing the old porcelain veneers. Next, the dentist will remove as much of the bonding material as possible.

Once the old veneers and bonding material have been removed, we will take impressions of the teeth. These impressions will be sent to our dental laboratory where they will be used to fabricate a new set of porcelain veneers. It generally takes about two weeks for the veneers to be completed and returned to our dental office. At this time, patients will return to have the porcelain veneers placed.

Again, a local aesthetic will be administered before beginning treatment. Then, we will lightly etch the teeth to create a rougher surface that will bond more easily with the veneers. The veneers will then be adhered to the facial surface of the teeth with a bonding material. Finally, we will use a curing light to harden this material and finalize the bonding process. The patient will leave our office with a new set of porcelain veneers that provide a stronger, more beautiful smile.
